Swindon 105.5 Visit

Lisa Gibbons

Before I begin, I wanted to mention that the steering group will happen on Wednesday 5th March, which might take place at the Swindon Hub. We’re also going to open monthly, face-to-face forums which will start soon at the conference room in VAS (Voluntary Action Swindon). Anyways, on to our adventure!

We all visited the Swindon 105.5 radio station last week! The broadcaster and station manager came to see us as soon as we arrived to give us a tour of the station and equipment. First, we visited the three recording studios at the station, and the station manager explained how the wall’s thickness and absorbing foam reflectors help with stopping sound from leaking in and out of the room, as well as helping to reduce echo when playing music. She also showed us the amps on the wall, and the computing equipment (my thing) along with the software they use when editing music.

Next, we moved on to the main room which consisted of two small, closed-door recording rooms for live broadcasts, as well as some food, drink, and snacks (to my unfortunate demise on the trip home, as cars don’t exactly agree with me) donated by some kind people.

After that, we listened to some ‘jingles’ (the messages added in-between songs to say things like ‘You’re listening to Swindon 105.5 radio’), and recorded our very own sample clips to see just how professional recordings are made. They aren’t going to be used as jingles on the radio station, though, but we still had fun nonetheless! Here’s my recording:

At the end of the tour, the station manager surprised us with an offer! We entered into one of the recording rooms I described earlier, and we found a full radio set, including a large mixer, a screen, and headphones for a big discount. The radio set is only £500, which just happens to fit our budget perfectly. With this mini radio set we can broadcast live, or make clips of audio, directly from the Baker’s Café! I can’t guarantee we’re going to use our budget on this radio set, but we’re all excited! We’re also not sure what time we’re going to start broadcasting on the radio station, but, quite literally… stay tuned!
